Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali on Saturday called on his party chief Shujaat Hussain on the eve of a crucial caucus aimed at seeking unification of various factions of Pakistan Muslim League.
Chiefs of all factions of PML and three chief ministers belonging to PML will attend the meeting, which has been on the cards for quite some time now but failed to materialise mainly because the different groups were not prepared to lose their identity. Moreover, election law also stands in the way of unification, it is further said.
Talking to newsmen, the Prime Minister said he had "neither seen nor read" the letter Kabir Wasti, senior vice-president of PML, was said to have written to President Musharraf, seeking removal of Jamali from office for his "disappointing performance".
But, he said, he was otherwise aware of the contents of the letter, as he observed that he had "great patience" in himself and he also respects others' right to have their points of view and opinions.
In response to a question, the Prime Minister did not rule out mid-term elections provided there was national consensus for that and it would do good to all concerned. But, in the very next breath he reminded that he was on record having said that the present Parliament would complete its term.
Jamali welcomed Farooq Leghari's announcement to merge National Alliance with the PML, and said that it was a wise step.
Commenting on the ban on inter-district movement of wheat in Punjab, the Prime Minister said that certain measures were necessary in order to minimise the role of middleman and ensure that growers of wheat got their due return.
He added that Punjab is the major producer of wheat and would always help other provinces as and when necessary.
He admitted of differences with Shujjat Hussain on the issue of Cabinet expansion, but hoped that these would be amicably resolved.
