US stocks hovered near unchanged Tuesday, erasing earlier gains, as shares that fell to 2004 lows in the previous session lured some buyers, but stubbornly high oil prices tempered Wall Street's mood.
Strength in Intel Corp and Cisco Systems Inc lifted the technology-heavy Nasdaq and Standard & Poor's 500 Index. But Altria Group Inc. dragged the blue chip Dow lower, a day after the food and tobacco company cut its 2004 earnings forecast.
The Dow Jones industrial average was up 8.17 points, or 0.08 percent, at 9,998.04, while the broader S&P 500 Index added 4.51 points, or 0.41 percent, to 1,091.63. The Nasdaq Composite Index gained 25.49 points, or 1.34 percent, to 1,921.56.
