Rioting Nigerian Muslims killed at least 11 Christians and set two churches ablaze in the northern city of Kano on Tuesday, in a reprisal for the slaying of hundreds of Muslims in central Nigeria last week.
Violence flared in at least two parts of Nigeria's second largest city after a protest march by thousands of Muslims demanding a clamp down on Christian militia responsible for last week's massacre in the remote farming town of Yelwa.
Nath Ikyur said he saw rioters stopping vehicles on the Bayero University Kano (BUK) road and selecting non-Muslims to be killed.
"I saw at least 10 dead bodies on the BUK road. I saw a group of five burned bodies at one point. Some of the others were cut with machetes," he said.
Another witness said she saw the body of a man stabbed to death by rioters.
Thousands of Christians took refuge in a police academy building on the outskirts of town to escape rioters armed with cutlasses and clubs.
Police, who routinely withhold casualty figures from religious violence, could not confirm any deaths.
Thousands of Muslims staged a protest earlier in the day and dispersed after delivering a petition to the Kano state governor.
