The Punjab University has held a record number of 150 meetings of its selection boards in the last four years since September 1999, and selected as many as 364 teachers on merit compared to only 65 selection boards meeting held in past 10 years from 1990 to 1999.
The Punjab University vice-chancellor Arshad Mahmood said this while presiding over a meeting on Thursday.
About the composition of a selection board, he said deans/chairmen/ directors/ principals are members of the boards in addition to a member from the Punjab Public Service Commission, Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) and two eminent scholars from the relevant discipline nominated by the chancellor/governor.
About the selection criteria, he said, 50 percent marks had been allocated for academic achievements, research publications and academic experience while remaining 50 percent fixed for interview, 20 were for subject specialists, 15 for oral communication skills, 10 for job aptitude and 5 for personality of a candidate.
Talking about the promotion, he maintained that there were no examination and courses for promotion, rather research work was the base of promotion of teachers.
The experts evaluate research publications of associate professors and professors, he added. A teacher has to undergo pre-service and in-service training to get required teaching skills after his selection in the university.
It is for the first time that pre-service and refresher in-service courses in communication skills, computer, multimedia and methods of teaching had been started in the university to improve the quality of teaching.
