The Central Board of Revenue (CBR) will appoint 638 tax officials on various positions at the Large Taxpayer Unit (LTU), Lahore, Medium Taxpayer Units (MTUs) at Karachi, Quetta, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi and Peshawar.
The staff requirement of LTU, Lahore is 192; MTU Karachi, 98; MTU Quetta, 50 positions; MTU Faisalabad 117 positions; MTU Rawalpindi 116 positions; and MTU Peshawar 65 positions.
At present, 84 officers and 52 staff are working in LTU Karachi. The number of technical persons has been enhanced and strength of non-technical personnel drastically reduced.
Sources told Business Recorder that the CBR Chairman Abdullah Yusuf would hold a meeting with the project directors of LTU/MTUs on May 20. The meeting would review the process of development in LTU/MTUs under the restructuring plan.
In subsequent years, LTUs will be opened in other major business and commercial centres of the country. They will have an integrated tax administration, catering for all taxes, such as income tax, sales tax and central excise duty under one roof.
This interfacing and integration is likely to substantially reduce irritants to taxpayers, smooth-out the tax administration and will also prove a role model for developing the approaches, attitudes and behaviour that would be followed by other organs of the CBR.
Integrity, transparency, accountability and understanding of problems from taxpayer's point of view will be the guiding principles of the workforce.
