The Karachi Port Trust is to build 13,000 low-cost houses for its employees near Mauripur here. The housing city, to be spread over a land of 500 acres, would be equipped with all modern living facilities, including water, electricity, sewerage, playgrounds, mosques, shopping centres and schools.
This will be the first and largest ever-housing project to be executed under KPT Workers Society.
The ready housing units would be provided by the KPT to its employees on easy instalments, which would be recovered from their salary.
The housing facility would also provide the KPT employees an easy and nearest access to their place of work enabling the workers of essential port service to reach on their duty during strikes frequently called by the political parties in Karachi.
The National Engineering Services of Pakistan (Nespak) is expected to draw a master plan for the KPT grand housing scheme. The credit for the housing scheme for general port workers goes to Vice Admiral Ahmed Hayat, Chairman KPT, who has also initiated a number of projects not only for the development of the port but for welfare of the port workers.
FLYOVER: The KPT has also awarded consultancy contract to Nespak for construction of a flyover at Korangi Road near Hino Chowk under Tameer-e-Karachi Programme.
The contract has been awarded for carrying out topographic survey, geo-technical investigations, traffic survey, detailed engineering design, cost estimates and tender documents, including technical specifications and working designs.
The duration for construction of the flyover is 24 months. The Nespak will also assist the KPT in awarding construction contract.
The flyover will interconnect the Korangi Road, Shaheed-e-Millat Road to Korangi Industrial Area and a road to DHA Phase-V11 Extension. It will facilitate smooth flow of traffic at the congested Hino Chowk by eliminating the signalised intersection.
