The sales of home appliances across the country have grown by 20 to 25 percent per annum, as their prices continue to reduce for the last couple of years because of intense competition and low cost imports from china.
Another factor of increasing the purchase of home appliances is the involvement of the banks, because these banks offer to their customers for purchasing appliances according to their own choices at low mark-up and the borrowers will have to return this debt in easy instalments.
The sales and prices of split air-conditioners have reduced to an all-time low, pushing up their sales and denting the market of window air-conditioners.
"The prices of split units have come down by an average Rs 10,000 or more a piece," a retailer Ghulam Shabbir claimed.
He said most people were buying split units because their prices were now well within their reach, adding besides, the split air-conditioners consume less energy and help save on the power bills.
The rates of window ACs have also reduced up to Rs 10,000. The prices of refrigerators have declined by Rs 2,500 to Rs 6,000 per piece depending on their size and make. The same is the case with microwave ovens and other home appliances.
"The consumers are getting benefits from the competition between the manufacturers and importers for the first time," said another retailer. The manufacturers or assemblers had compromised on the quality of their products just to stay in competition and increased their sales by reducing their prices, complained the customers.
"It is wrong that we've started using poor quality parts. In fact, we have slashed our profit marking and are trying to cover the losses (in margins) by increasing our sales," a senior executive of a local company said.
Likewise, he said the manufacturers had replaced their old technology with modern one and had improved their efficiency of quality and reduce production cost, thus, bring down prices of their products.
