Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari has said that the government is significantly reducing bandwidth rates in the country, and formal announcement in this regard is expected during next couple of weeks.
He was addressing the opening ceremony of 'NetSol IT Village Software Technology Park' here on Friday.
Leghari maintained that efforts are underway to slash the bandwidth rates to a level at where Internet consumers can enjoy DSL connectivity on the present rates of dial up connectivity.
He said that government is focussing on automation of its departmental records and data and in this connection local IT companies are being encouraged. He said that IT ministry is also assisting Pakistan-Army in its automation process. He claimed that infrastructure facilities with reference to IT sector in Pakistan are of international standards. He said that a delegation of UK investors is arriving in Pakistan in the first week of June, to explore investment opportunities in IT sector of Pakistan.
Later, talking to newsmen Leghari said that the government is seriously considering providing relief in taxes to local IT industry. He assured that no such step would be taken in the forthcoming budget that can affect the growth of IT sector in the country.
He said that government has decided not to award any IT projects to any foreign company.
To another question, he said the government intends to provide relief to PTCL consumers by reducing tariff. He said he held several meetings with big business groups of Pakistan to persuade them for starting IT projects in the country.
Addressing on this occasion, President NetSol Salim Ghauri said that NetSol IT Village has been completed in five-year with a project cost of 2 million US dollars.
Provincial IT Minister Abdul Aleem Khan also spoke the occasion.
