The International Biodiversity Day (IBD) is being celebrated all over the world on May 22 to highlight the significance of biodiversity conservation.
According to a statement of World Conservation Union (IUCN), it symbolises that nations throughout the world co-operate to halt and reverse the accelerated loss of biological and genetic resources of the planet.
It gives an opportunity to all to join hands and talk about the existing and emerging problems caused by biodiversity loss and prospects of biodiversity conservation.
IBD celebrations are focussed towards giving a human face to biodiversity issues, empowering people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development by conserving biodiversity, promoting an understanding that communities are pivotal to changing attitude towards environmental issues, and advocating partnerships which will ensure that all nations and peoples enjoy a healthier and more prosperous future.
In this year, the theme for IBD 2004 is 'Biodiversity: Food, Water and Health for All', chosen to reflect the firm commitment of Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) to achieving the millennium's development goals (MDGs).
CBD is a UN convention to which Pakistan is also a signatory which aims to protect and sustainably use the diversity of life.
It presents varied ecosystems, which support a large variety of biodiversity, like mangrove forests, mountains, plants, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fishes, and invertebrates which contribute to the overall biodiversity of Pakistan.
