Closing stock market indices
Here is how major stock markets outside the United States ended on Friday.
EUROPE: European shares fell as concern over oil prices, rekindled security concerns, and a slide in cellphone giant Nokia overshadowed strength in mining groups.
Crude oil dominated investors' radar screens as the OPEC cartel meets in Amsterdam on Saturday to discuss a Saudi proposal to hike output to cool high oil prices that could damage economic recovery if sustained.
The FTSE Eurotop 300 index ended off 0.14 percent at 974.5 points, with declining issues just outpacing advancers, and volume about average at 2.5 billion euros.
FRANKFURT: The DAX index ended at 3,831.84 points, down 7.48 or 0.19 percent but better off on the week by 28.74 points.
PARIS: The CAC-40 index closed at 3,607.02 points, down 2.95 or 0.08 percent but a small gain of 3.76 over the week.
ZURICH: The Swiss market index closed at 5,645.1 points, down 64.9 or 1.14 percent, losing 39.9 points on the week.
MILAN: The All Share Mibtel index closed at 20,545 points, down 38 or 0.18 percent but rising 32 points since May 14.
SYDNEY: Stocks ended higher in muted trade as investors chased banks for attractive yield plays, then stepped back to absorb shake-ups in the property trust and telecommunications sectors. The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index closed 16.6 points, or 0.49 percent, firmer at 3,395.4, a rise of 35.9 points since last Friday.
JOHANNESBURG: Heavyweight mining stocks took centre stage, staging modest rallies on the back of firmer metal prices and hope that China's insatiable demand for metals would continue to give support. The All-share index closed at 10,157.47 points, up 108.22 or 1.08 percent.
The all-share index ended the week 390.75 points higher, clawing back from the six percent it had shed the previous week. The All Gold index closed at 1,887.36 points, up 41.99 or 2.28 percent, and gaining 113.18 points since last Friday.
The Industrial index closed at 7,254.77 points, up 69.24 or 0.96 percent and higher on the week by 290.86 points.
