Chief Executive Officer, Pakistan Horticulture Development & Export Board (PHDEB), Shamoon Sadiq has expressed the hope that the export of mangoes is expected to increase by five percent to 10 percent during the current season.
Pakistani mango has always been considered a hot cake in Europe and the Scandinavian countries and this year too, its export will be higher in this region, he told this scribe.
Similarly, he said export to short distance destinations like Middle East and Gulf area will also be increased as mango can be shipped through sea routes at economical rates. He said that last year mango export was estimated at 67,000 metric tons amounting to more than $17 million. This year, the volume and value of mango export would surpass last year's figures, he added.
"Peak season is beginning from June 1, when the mango will be full ripe and its taste and shape will be ideal," Shamoon said.
He also said Pakistan exported 3519 containers of kinno fruit during the 2003-04 season, against 2137 containers in the preceding year, showing an increase of 64.67 percent.
He said that exports which started during the last week of October last year, picked up significantly during the month of March.
He said PHDEB was striving to seek new markets for Pakistan's citrus fruit especially kinoo, Pakistan produces about 8 percent of the world's citrus fruits, grown nearly in all the four provinces of the country in varying proportions.
