President General Pervez Musharraf's globally published vision of Enlightened Moderation has been acclaimed as a clarion call for the Muslim world for its socio-economic emancipation and a timely reminder to the West of its obligation vis-à-vis resolution of lingering political disputes.
Appearing simultaneously in several leading papers around the world, President Musharraf's OIC-adopted urging for an enlightened approach in the interest of world peace, received attention of opinion-makers, intellectuals, policy enunciators in a number of Arab, Asian and Western countries.
The article was published last week both in English and national languages in prominent dailies in the United States, France, Germany, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Turkey, China and Bangladesh.
The majority of newspapers carried the article on their editorial pages, according it the prominence as the matter of the moment. The article was also published in Pakistan's leading dailies.
President Musharraf, in his strategy, advocated that concurrent actions by the Muslim world - rejection of extremism in favour of socio-economic progress - and by the West - resolution of festering political disputes involving Muslims with justice - offered a way forward to durable peace and progress in the world.
The world wide elaboration of the President's vision coincided with an international seminar in Islamabad as a gathering of intelligentsia from the Muslim world expressed their whole-hearted support for Musharraf's vision.
The feedback received by Khalid Al-Maeena, Editor-in-Chief of the widely-read Arab News on the article, speaks of a keen and positive response from intellectuals in Saudi Arab and other countries of the Arab world.
A large number of e-mail messages received by the Arab News editor urged a "brainstorming" follow-up to the two-pronged strategy in the Muslim world. Some intellectuals, welcoming Musharraf's ideas as a positive way forward, suggested a panel audience with the President to further promote his views and vision.
In the United States, where the influential Washington Post displayed the article prominently, the US State Department officials supported the President's vision of Enlightened Moderation.
Spokesman Richard Boucher told a daily Press briefing that the US agrees with Pakistani leader that extremism and militancy lead to violence and despair rather than hope and prosperity.
The Pakistani community in America welcomed President's emphasis on simultaneous implementation of the strategy of enlightened moderation as "powerful enough" to steer Muslims out of backwaters and lead them to socio-economic development.
The Hi Pakistan, an Internet publication, gaining popularity in the Pakistani-American community, described President Musharraf's article as an honest appraisal of the actual state of affairs.
Egypt's vastly circulated Arabic language daily Al-Ahram, an important voice in the Arab world, carried full text of the article, putting across President Musharraf's message of enlightenment to its wide readership.
The weekly English language publication with the same name also brought out the article.
