In spite of procurement of 0.3 million tons sugar by the government, the mill owners have not fulfilled their promise to make payment on account of quality premium to the growers.
The procurement of sugar was subject to the condition that growers' dues would be paid by June 15 for which only a few days remain to fulfil the commitment.
A few mills are, however, reported to have made payment but only to influential growers. These were also small payments.
The procurement programme of sugar has been finalised by the Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP). There is an amount of over Rs 1 billion outstanding, particularly in Sindh, against sugar mills on account of quality premium to the growers.
The Sindh Sugarcane Growers Association is making fresh representation to the Government to remind the mill-owners of their commitment.
A spokesman of the Association said, "Our duty is to cry but it is yet to be heard by anybody."
The demand of the growers is pending for the last couple of years.
