The Central Board of Revenue (CBR) is planning to monitor the activities of customs officials working at airports and ports using close circuit television network linked with the offices of Chairman CBR, Member Customs and Directorate General Intelligence and Investigation.
Official sources told Business Recorder here on Tuesday that the CBR would ensure that the customs officials on duty at the airports have correctly evaluated customs duty on the imported goods in line with the customs rules in vogue.
Chairman CBR, Member Customs and DG Intelligence and Investigation would be able to watch clearance process of the incoming and outgoing passengers at the airports live.
This system would act as deterrent against malpractice's in calculation of duties and taxes flouting baggage rules.
Officials said that the CBR has taken disciplinary action against 15 customs officials, who were misusing the rules at the airports.
Their activities were monitored by the close circuit television system installed at the airports. Out of these officials, three belong to Karachi, 10 to Rawalpindi and three to Lahore.
Officials said that the CBR has recently issued instructions to all the collectors of customs to submit the recorded clippings of unusual events at the airports, including cases where customs officials were seen taking bribes etc.
On the directive of CBR, the multinational company responsible for installation as well as handling of recording equipment at the airports supplied these tapes to the customs authorities.
As a result of these instructions, the CBR has received recorded videotapes of customs officers whose activities were captured live and subsequently disciplinary action was taken against them.
