The feudal class has been a great hindrance in spread of education in the country. Standing Committee on Education Chairperson Senator Rozeena A. Alam stated this here on Wednesday.
She was addressing a conference on "Challenges of 21st century and education system of Pakistan" organised by the federal government teachers association.
Rozeena, who was the chief guest, said that the government is taking action against these ghost schools. She said that scientific education, especially information technology is very important to acquire knowledge and keep it updated.
Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed called for improvement in three areas: status, salary and the role of teachers.
He highlighted women's role in improving the state of education. He assured the teachers that he would discuss their demands with the concerned authorities.
Earlier in her address of welcome, Federal Government Teachers Association President Mehmood Hassan Raja demanded of the government to improve the conditions of teachers, to enhance their present grades (9 to 16) and give them incentives and relief in the coming budget.
He demanded that the teachers should be given incentives and relief in the upcoming budget.
He negated the idea that the present curriculum was not updated and accused that certain non governmental organisations (NGOs) and other organisations are trying to tarnish the image of Islam by saying that the present curriculum brings students towards sectarian violence and extremism.
He challenged such NGOs and organisations to come and have a debate with his organisation.
After the conference one teacher from FG Junior Model School Asma Aziz complained that her contractual job as teacher has ended and she might get unemployed.
She said that she and some of her colleagues are working voluntarily without any pay for the last three months.
