When we look at our education system there are two things that stand out glaringly:
A. The standard of English, both written and spoken of our graduates, is far below the international level. To compete internationally, our professionals must be at par with professionals in UK, USA, France, Germany, Italy, Canada etc.
B. I.T. Courses must make it mandatory for students to pass one international language, be it a diploma or a graduate course.
Our younger generation who seeks admission in foreign universities have to qualify in TOEFL or IELTS which they find hard to do.
Internationally, Pakistani degrees are evaluated as par with the High School Leaving Examination. This is so in Canada.
With the low evaluation of our education, our educated lot are deprived of better jobs and fail to merge with the social structure of the country where they migrate.
They land themselves in jobs as security guards, taxi drivers, warehouse workers, parking lot attendants.
All this because of the failure of our education system. We have not given the rightful place in our system to English.
Our kids are exposed to learning English in the 6th class. With five years left to pass High School, a student has only six years to learn English. He is on a weaker wicket when he enters college/university.
One foreign language must be made compulsory like French, German, Chinese, Russian to pass in the Intermediate Examination.
This exposure will help to comprehend the basics of education, if one gets a chance to go to, say, Germany, France, Russia, China.
On the international horizon, most western countries will have a shortage in the middle rank structure of society. With a low population rate, common law marriages, the death rate far exceeds the birth rate.
Over the years it will create a vacuum in society. It is bound to happen in Canada, Germany, France etc.
There will be a great demand for young immigrants to migrate. For instance, Germany now needs engineers desperately.
They will open the doors for immigration. A nation would be lucky to meet such demands if they have the qualified professionals plus, it will be an added advantage if, apart from English, they know the language of the country.
Our Ministry of manpower should be equipped with the challenges that might be thrown on the international level which could benefit the country.
Efforts in this direction are needed to cope with a foreseeable situation.
