Capital Development Authority (CDA) Director (Environment) Iftikhar Ahmed Awan said on Saturday that efforts are under way to make capital home of flowers.
Speaking in a PTV programme, he said the Authority has grown a number of plants along the highways and main roads, which will add to the beauty of capital by next year.
Iftikhar said the CDA environment department's responsibility is to make capital city green and beautiful, adding the department's responsibility is to look after existing parks, forests and nurseries in the city, and plant flowers and trees along highways and main roads of the city.
Every sectors of the city has four to six beautiful parks along with green belt, he said, adding with the development of new sector it is also imperative for the department to allocate land for parks and green belts.
Iftikhar Awan said first two phases of beautification of the Jinnah Avenue have been completed while remaining two phases will be completed by the end of July.
He said Faisal and Khayaban avenues' beautification designs have been approved and work on them will be initiated soon, while work on beautification of 'Golra More' will be initiated within a couple of weeks as its design has also been approved by the Authority.
To a question about the problem of flower sellers, he said the CDA department has made special markets for them in F-6 Sector, adding it is also under consideration to make another flower market in F-10 Sector.
It may be mentioned here that at present, the country is exporting about 12 million roses, 8 million cut-flowers and 2 million various kinds of flowers to many countries.
At present, he said the country's flower industry has captured very small portion of the international market, which can be increased by concerted efforts with the co-ordination of public and private sectors.
