A workshop on "Identification of Problems in Livestock Sector" organised by the Provincial Management of Sindh for strengthening of livestock service project (SLSP) held here on Saturday.
The vice chancellor of Sindh Agriculture University of Tando Jam, Dr Bashir Ahmed Sheikh said that the European Union project is in favour of management and administration than research and development.
He said that if there is no research we will not be able to disseminate knowledge to livestock farmer.
He said there is no dearth of modern technology but we have to train our people to absorb this knowledge.
He said this sector has been neglected by the successive government which can be judge by the fact that it contributes 9.6 percent to national economy but it has never been allocated amounts in commensurate to its contribution.
He said our research scholars were often found quoting the production and development of livestock sectors of the developed countries. He also said that the setting up of livestock estates or village is a good proposal but its implementation need to be ensured.
He quoted that the failure of milk plant and cattle range project was due to the fact that the people who were involve in this project were devoid of basic resources.
Earlier, Dr Baz Muhammad Junejo, Director General, Livestock and Fisheries was welcoming the participants explained in details about the infrastructure livestock diseases, development projects and bottlenecks and said that the province which is a major exporter of animal products needs more financial support to bridge the gap between the availability and demands of milk and meat. He also suggested for setting up of dairy colonies on Super and National Highways to minimise the waste of milk production.
European Council Project country co-ordinator, Tony William explained in detail the background of the project and said that the livestock sector was very complex.
He said that the farmers keep different types of livestock in different agro-ecological zones and in different farming systems. Dr J.H.H Maehl European co-manager on the occasion said that the workshop aims to identify existing problems in the livestock sector.
Dr Afzal of animal sciences of Pakistan Agriculture Research Council (Parc) also informed the participants on various research projects being carried out by the Parc.
