Keeping in view the speedy urbanisation in major cities, the government has decided to launch an Urban Renewal Program (URP) to revamp urban planning.
This was stated by Finance Minister Shaukat Aziz here on Sunday while speaking at a post-budget news briefing.
He said that people are rushing towards major cities for the sake of employment and better living standard, resulting in an extra burden on these cities.
"There are lots of problems including water shortage, lack of accommodation facilities and poor conditions of roads," he stated.
Shaukat said that the government, with the help of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the World Bank (WB), would launch URP to revamp urban planning.
He said that according to the plan, the government would start focusing on Lahore and Karachi.
"The ADB and the WB will provide us resources to revamp the planning of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Quetta and Hyderabad as well," Shaukat added.
The finance minister informed the media persons that issues of water shortage, accommodation facilities and damaged roads will be solved on priority basis.
