Heavy downpour, accompanied by windstorm, lashed the provincial metropolis on Sunday morning providing respite from muggy weather but causing problems for motorists and residents of low-lying areas.
Rain, which started at around 10 am, continued for an hour inundating low-lying areas of the city, while various roads of posh areas, including Allama Iqbal Town, Shah Jamal, Gulberg, were submerged under water due to defective drainage system.
Most affected areas were various localities of the walled city besides Begum Pura, Angoori Bagh, Chauburji, Krishan Nagar, Sandha, Walton and Ferozepur road from Chungi Amarsadhu to the Bank stop.
POWER BREAKDOWNS: As usual, various localities faced power breakdowns following rain and windstorm and electricity could not be restored to different areas till the filing of this report in the afternoon.
According to the local Met office, the rain was caused by weather system involving a westerly wave, which is moving across Malakand division and Kashmir. An elongated seasonal low lying over most areas of Pakistan and south-westerly monsoon is reaching Punjab and its adjoining areas.
Cloud bursts yielded three mm rain in the provincial metropolis, while reports of rain have also been received from other cities, including Faisalabad 38mm, Kohat 35mm, Sargodha 29mm, Kakul 24mm, Muzaffarbad and Dir 18 each, Attock 14mm, Mianwali 12mm, Tarbela 11mm, D.I Khan, Kalam and Palandri one mm each.
Weather pundits have forecast scattered rainfall of light to moderate intensity with one or two heavy falls over the upper catchments of all the major rivers along with northern and north-eastern Punjab.
Rain of light to moderate intensity over central NWFP and central Punjab and isolated rain over southern Punjab and northeastern Balochistan is forecast for the next 24 hours.
