Sindh Chief Secretary Dr Mutawakkal Kazi has directed the DCO Hyderabad to pursue an effective strategy for ensuring safe drinking water supply to Hyderabad.
At an important meeting held on Wednesday, the IG Police, after receipt of a mobile telephone call, had informed the chief secretary that the situation in Hyderabad was not conducive because of water and electricity crisis.
Dr Kazi directed DCO Hyderabad Mahmood Hussain Syed, who was also present in the meeting, to take immediate steps for supply of safe water.
He also immediately talked to the DG Rangers over telephone and asked him to assist the District Government Hyderabad and other concerned departments in connection with water supply.
The DG Rangers invited DCO Hyderabad to his office and inquired about the details.
Meanwhile, addressing the meeting the chief secretary said, "Karachi, Hyderabad, Sindh and the entire country is our motherland and, as such, we all should strive together for solving the problems."
Additional Chief Secretary Development Ghulam Sarwar Khehro told the meeting, "progress and prosperity can be ensured by solving the problems and in this regard, his department is serving the very cause through promoted liaison with other departments."
ACS Local Government Mohammed Saleem Khan informed the meeting, "at present, Karachi needs supply of 650 MGD water as against the availability of 550 MGD. He said on completion of K-III project, the city will start receiving additional 100 MGD."
The chief secretary asked MD KWSB Brigadier Iftikhar to get leakage in water pipelines repaired, get theft of water controlled and monitor the performance of staff as a step towards solving the water shortage problem. He told him to ensure continuous supply of water through generators in case of power failure.
Dr Kazi also emphasised the need for effective steps for water filtration and purification throughout the province.
Meanwhile, Mutawakkal Kazi has called for a report regarding visit of certain officials of Karachi Water and Sewerage Board to UK.
The chief secretary sought the information on a newspaper report in which it was stated that despite shipment of the machinery for the water board, these officials spent a huge amount on their visit abroad in connection with the inspection of the machinery, which had already been shipped to Pakistan.
Dr Kazi asked the managing director KWSB to submit the report to him within three days.
