The Economic Survey 2003-04 reveals that the incidence of poverty has "significantly reduced", and, at the same time, it indicates that unemployment rate during the fiscal year 2003-04 increased to 8.27 percent as compared to the year 2000-01.
The analysis is against the accepted fact that the rate of unemployment remains directly proportional to the level of poverty and, if unemployment increases poverty consequently grows further.
Unfortunately, the national data and statistics released by the government vide the above document are unreliable, in most of the cases, like any other year.
Other cases in point are achieving the low population growth rate of 1.9% and high literacy rate of 54% as mentioned in the Economic Survey.
These claims are simply amazing, and do not match with the ground realities.
May I ask the government as to whom are we deceiving? Ourselves, of course.
