President Pervez Musharraf has called upon elected representatives to make all efforts for promotion of peace and harmony in the country for continued economic development.
He was talking to a delegation of MQM parliamentarians who called on him at Aiwan-e-Sadr, Islamabad, on Saturday.
The President emphasised that elected representatives can play a vital role in identifying anti-social elements as they have in-depth knowledge of their respective constituencies. A close co-operation between the elected representatives and the law enforcing agencies would break the back of these elements who are out to create instability in the country, he added.
He said that the government on its part was endeavouring to net the criminals and award them exemplary punishment through courts. He said peace and stability was a prerequisite for accelerated economic development. Massive financial allocations have been made in the federal and provincial budgets for mega and social sector projects.
In this connection, he said, some major projects are being implemented in Karachi. He assured them that federal government would extend all possible assistance for projects in Sindh, particularly in Karachi, for the welfare of the common man.
The members discussed with the President matters of national importance. They assured the President that they would devote their energies to maintaining law and order and socio-economic uplift of the people.
The MPs also briefed the President about some problems in both urban and rural areas in Sindh.
Those who met the President included Khalid Wahab, Nawab Mirza, Mohammad Farooq Sattar, Iqbal M Ali Khan, Shamim Siddiqui. Dr Abdul Qadir Khanzada, Haider Abbas Rizvi, Khalid Younis, Israr-ul-Ebad, Dr Aamer Liaquat Hussain, Dev Das, Shamim Akhtar, Afsar Begum and Shabina Talat.
