The Port Qasim Authority (PQA) received 90 applications from expatriates interested in acquiring land for industrial purpose in the proximity of 'Eastern Industrial Zone' of the country's second largest port.
On the instructions of Federal Minister for Communications Babar Ghauri, the balloting for plots was held at the port by board member Syed Saleem Ahmed Zaidi here on Saturday.
The communications minister after assuming charge of his ministry visited the PQA and directed to establish a scheme for overseas Pakistanis in which plots of 1210 square yards would be allotted for industrial purpose.
He simplified the procedure for the allotment and made terms and conditions of application forms easy. These forms were than sent to the communications ministry for onward processes to Pakistan embassies and consulates abroad for publicity as well as distribution among expatriates.
About 90 applications were received by the PQA up to June 26, this year along with the required payment in foreign exchange.
The location earmarked for "Overseas Pakistanis Scheme" is situated in the Eastern Industrial Zone of the port, where large industries like FJFC, ICI, Engro Chemicals, etc., are already operating.
The zone is a potential area for industrial activities where the federal government recently announced establishing a "Textile and Garment City".
It is envisaged that the scheme would attract potential foreign exchange and help create job opportunities.
