The US farmers planted an astonishing 80.968 million acres of corn and a record 74.809 million acres of soybeans, putting record harvests within reach, the government said on Wednesday.
It also counted 410 million bushels of soybeans in US stockpiles on June 1, the smallest supply for that date since 1977.
The Agriculture Department's annual acreage report listed upland cotton plantings of 13.7 million acres, durum wheat of 2.74 million acres, and other spring wheat of 13.7 million acres.
Corn (maize) plantings (32.767 million hectares) were the largest since 1985 and up 3 percent from last year.
Soybean plantings (30.274 million hectares) were up 2 percent. Cotton was up 3 percent, durum wheat down 6 percent and spring wheat down 1 percent.
