NWFP Governor Lieutenant General Syed Iftikhar Hussain Shah (Retd) has said that the government has raised the education budget for Fata by Rs 280 million, which is 4 percent higher than the previous year's allocation, saying that during the current financial year Rs 1 billion would be spent in education sector alone in Fata.
He was addressing a well-attended function after inaugurating the IT Laboratory in the Government Higher Secondary School at Jamrud in Khyber Agency on Saturday.
The governor on this occasion also distributed scientific equipment and world space digital radio sets to the Agency Education Officers for utilisation in the educational institutions of Fata.
Senator Hamid Ullah Jan Afridi, secretary to the governor, Sahibzada Saeed Ahmad and Political Agent Arbab Muhammad Arif were also present on the occasion besides tribal elders, heads of lines departments and officials of the education department.
The governor said that elementary-level changes have been brought in the policy regarding opening of new schools for the benefit of the community.
The governor also cautioned that no ghost schools would be allowed to exist and all new appointments in the educational institutions would be made on contract basis so that the in-efficient and irresponsible teachers could be terminated forthwith.
The governor said that in the new financial year computer and science laboratories and libraries would be added to all the high and higher secondary schools in Fata, whereas at least one addition room will be constructed in each primary school.
QUALITY EDUCATION: Laying emphasis on quality education, the governor said, "the present era is the era of competition and we could prepare the tribal students to compete when we properly focus on improving the quality of education."
He also said that the mechanism of constant check and balance has been introduced in Fata so as the working of educational and health institutions in particular are properly monitored. The governor on this occasion also approved a tube-well for Jamrud Higher Secondary School.
The governor also awarded special prizes to a male and a female teacher for their outstanding performance.
The Director Education Fata, Professor Dr Abdur Rauf, in his welcome address highlighted the development profile of Fata Education Department and said that eight male and five female colleges would be opened in the Agency during the current financial year.
Similarly, 137 primary and middle schools would also be upgraded. He also disclosed that BSc, BEd. classes would start in the Agency this year, which, he termed an unprecedented initiative.
