Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan have stressed to share information related to drugs and its traffickers among the law enforcement agencies of the three countries on monthly as well as on day to day basis to curb drug trafficking.
In the two day tripartite meeting of the Inter Government Technical Committee comprising the three countries held under the auspices of United Nations Organisation for Drug Control (UNODC), the core issue of drugs and its smuggling across the borders was discussed in detail.
The meeting concluded here on Tuesday was chaired by the Secretary Ministry of Narcotics Control Major Khalid Latif (Retd). The senior officials of anti narcotics force along with other officials of drug enforcement agencies also participated in the deliberations.
The officers-in-charge of UNODC in Islamabad and Kabul also participated in the meeting.
The government of Pakistan and Iran have already signed MoU to check smuggling of narcotics in the region. It was for the first time that the Afghan government was also invited to attend the deliberations of the Inter Government Technical Committee.
The government of Afghanistan was also invited to enter into the MoU between Pakistan and Iran. The Afghan delegation agreed to sign MoU in due course of time.
Establishment of intelligence network, designation of focal persons with all the three respective embassies, training of Afghan officers in Pakistan and Iran to check the production of poppy crop in Afghanistan and provision of alternative livelihood also came under discussion.
The UNODC offered their full support to overcome the issue of narcotics and its smuggling in the region.
It was agreed that next meeting of the IGTC would be held in February next in Sheraz, Iran.
The secretary also appreciated the role of UNODC in combating the challenge of narcotics in the region.
