The NWFP Governor Lieutenant General Syed Iftikhar Hussain Shah (Retd) has declared the establishment of the second campus of Malakand University of Science & Technology at Sheringal in Upper Dir District and upgrade the existing facilities accordingly and said that from now onward both the campuses of the university will work throughout the year with equal status and all facilities would be made available.
Addressing a well attended gathering at the premises of the University Public School after formally performing of the earth breaking ceremony of forestry department as well as High Altitude High Valued Medicinal Plants Preservation and Research Project at Sheringal in Upper Dir District on Tuesday, the governor who is also the chancellor of the university further announced 50 percent concession to all girl students as well as 30 percent concession in tuition fees to the boys of the university including those of its subsidiary colleges and schools at both the campuses studying in KG to 7th class of the University Public School.
Beside above, the governor further declared to upgrade the status of the University Public School Sheringal to secondary level and said that apart from the earlier announced grant to the tune of Rs 5.0 million for the school, another grant of Rs 300,000 will also be provided for further improvement in the facilities of the school.
Since, he added, the resources of our universities and their subsidiary institutions have started getting improvement therefore, he remarked that we have decided to transfer the benefit of it to the respective people.
The ceremony was also addressed by provincial Minister for Health Inyatullah, MPA Muhammad Farid Khan and District Nazim Tariq Ullah while apart from a large number of local elders and people as well as representatives of PCSIR Laboratory Islamabad and different universities, the Vice-chancellor of NWFP University of Engineering & Technology Syed Imtiaz Hussain Gillani were also present on this occasion.
Fortunately, the governor said the dream which they conceived almost about three years back has started materialising and Insha'Allah the day is not far away when this institution will be fully groomed to the desired level.
This state of affair, he added is becoming really a great source of pleasure for him personally and expressed the hope that the facilities being made available to the people would be fully utilised.
In fact, he said it is the education, which is indispensable to bring a change in the outlook of the people, for the establishment of an enlightened and aware society and get the people rid of ignorance and backwardness. No doubt, the governor said, the government is making its best to promote educational facilities and develop educational as well as other social sector institutions yet, he remarked it is also the responsibility of the local people to come forward and share the efforts being made in this connection.
He particularly urged the philanthropists to be come united, constitute trusts and organisations and wage struggle in this respect.
The manpower of the area, the governor said is a real asset and it must be decorated with the ornament of latest knowledge as well as training in different fields to enable it to significantly contribute both in the development of the area and the country.
In fact, he said the development is closely linked to the spread of education and knowledge which is must to have a respectable status amongst the comity of nations.
The governor advised the people especially the elders of the area to play their due role in the full utilisation of the facilities being made available particularly for the promotion of education for females in the area, which he remarked is rather more important for bringing a pleasant change in the life of the people and the society as the whole.
Referring to the points raised by vice-chancellor of the university in his welcome address, the governor declared not only to continue the up-gradation process of the subsidiary colleges and public schools of the university but also to further expand their network in accordance with the requirements.
He also express his desire that the forestry department as well as the high valued medicinal plants research project must be completed within the given time frame wherein possibility should be created to raise demonstration plots to educate and instigate the local farmers to cultivate the herbs as cash crops.
Inayatullah and other speakers while addressing on this occasion thanked the governor for his keen interest in the promotion of educational facilities in the area and declared to extend their fullest co-operation in this connection.
They also described the efforts of the governor as revolutionary one and said that these would remain as inimitable in the annals of history of the area.
Earlier, Professor Dr Jehandad Shah while presenting the address of welcome disclosed that the entire equipment and chemicals of the biotechnology laboratory to be established in the campus have already been arranged at a cost of Rs 10 million.
The faculty of the university have also been upgraded and apart from the existing three Ph.D. and seven M.Phil faculty members, two more teachers have been sent abroad to get Ph.D. degrees whereas another four teachers would be going outside the country by next year for this purpose.
The university, he said conducted examinations of 7,000 students of its affiliated institutions during last year whereas the number of the student has raised to 18,000 this year. As far as the Sheringal campus is concerned, he said four latest laboratories would be developed here. Similarly, he said most latest communication facilities are being installed at Sheringal after which it would have direct communication links with the entire world.
He also appealed the people to fully avail the opportunities being offered to them.
