The first patient treated at the new 'Bone Marrow Transplant' (BMT) Unit at Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) was recently discharged from the Hospital after successful treatment lasting 26 days.
Amir Wahid Mughal, 28, had been diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease six months after his marriage and was undergoing initial treatment at a hospital in Lahore.
He approached the BMT Unit after seeing an announcement in a newspaper, and a diagnostic test qualified him to undergo 'Autologous Bone Marrow Transplantation' at AKUH.
Describing the transplantation as a success for the entire BMT team, Dr Irfan Vaziri, Assistant Professor and Consultant Haematologist and Oncologist, and Dr Salman Adil, Assistant Professor and Consultant Haematologist, commended the professionalism of BMT trained nurses as well as AKUH's state-of-the-art laboratory and blood bank services.
"This is just the first step. Amir has returned to Gujranwala and is living a normal life with his family. He is still in contact with us and adhering to a follow-up regimen at AKUH," said Dr Vaziri.-PR
