A two-day training workshop organised by the Working Women Organisation (WWO) in a bid to create awareness among women about their political and social rights, was concluded here on Wednesday.
All Pakistan Trade Union Federation (APFTU) General Secretary Gulzar Ahmed Chaudhry while addressing the participants of the workshop said that basic objective of trade union, association or organisation was to take steps for the welfare of the workers.
Gulzar, who is also President of Punjab Workers Confederation, said that Pakistani women possessed technical skills and capabilities but they were not being given due status or reward. He said that people of rural areas do not allow girls to get primary education.
He said that women must broaden their vision and share their ideas with others to bring change in the society. Both men and women should work together, as no nation can achieve the goal of progress and prosperity without their active participation, he added.
He said that working women must form committees for protection of their rights.
Zareena Hashmi, one of the factory workers pointed out that young girls were sent in Urdu medium school, while boys were sent to English medium schools. She was of the view that such discrimination against women should be eliminated and Labour laws must be implemented in Pakistan.
The workshop was a source of information that would help women workers develop a political vision.
Later, a lecture was delivered on CEDAW (convention on elimination of all discrimination against women). Major issues that were highlighted in the workshop were the women trafficking.
