The US Agriculture Department said on Thursday it will donate 97,500 tonnes of US wheat and soybean meal to four countries in Latin America and Azerbaijan.
The USDA said the crops will be sold locally and the proceeds to be used in improving the respective country's agricultural sector. The six separate US donations are:
-- 22,000 tonnes of wheat to Adventist Development and Relief Agency, a private voluntary organisation, for use in Azerbaijan,
-- 6,000 tonnes of soyameal and 5,000 tonnes of wheat to International Rescue Committee for use in Azerbaijan,
-- 21,000 tonnes of wheat to ACDI/VOCA for use in Ecuador,
-- 12,500 tonnes of soymeal to Cooperative Housing Foundation for use in Honduras,
-- 8,000 tonnes soyameal to TechnoServe for use in El Salvador.
-- 23,000 tonnes of wheat to the government of Guyana,
The donations were made under USDA's Food for Progress program. The supply period is fiscal 2004, which ends September 30.
The USDA said it expects to donate around 615,000 tonnes of US farm goods to 33 countries under this year's program.
