A Lebanese-born US marine who resurfaced this week after going missing in Iraq was in good health and being debriefed at a US military hospital in Germany, a medical centre spokeswoman said on Saturday.
Corporal Wassef Ali Hassoun, who was at one point thought to have been beheaded, turned himself over to the US embassy in Beirut on Thursday and was flown to the hospital in Landstuhl, southern Germany, on Friday.
"He is having a debriefing. He slept well. He had chicken, rice and beans for lunch. His health is OK," said the spokeswoman. Asked about his emotional state, she said: "Well, he is going through debriefing. When you have been in that situation for a while you need to decompress. That is quite routine though."
She did not give any details from the debriefing.
Hassoun's disappearance from his unit in Iraq, apparent abduction and reappearance weeks later have been mired in confusion.
An Iraqi Islamist group reiterated on Saturday that it had freed Hassoun because he pledged to quit the US armed forces and urged other soldiers to do the same to escape their "predicament" in Iraq.
