Pakistan Kiryana Merchants Association (PKMA) has demanded of the Central Board of Revenue (CBR) to reduce import duty on green tea and bring it at par with the back tea.
In a letter to CBR Chairman Abdullah Yusuf, PKMA Senior Vice-Chairman Jaffer Kudia noted that in the 2004-05 Federal budget, the import duty on black tea had been reduced from 20 percent to 10 percent and withholding tax from six percent to two percent.
He pointed out that from July 2003 to May 2004, approximately 110,593.191 tonnes of black tea valued at 17.7 million dollars was imported.
He further noted that the import duty and withholding tax on green tea remained unchanged at 20 percent and six percent respectively.
He said the total import of green tea during July 2003 to May 2004 came to 1325.455 tonnes valued at one million dollars approximately.
