The mango exporters have started shipments of Chaunsa variety of the mango to the Middle Eastern countries by air instead of reefer container as the former has failed to protect the quality of the fruit due to its high sweetened content.
Earlier, the exporters used reefer containers for the mango and vegetable shipments to Dubai and Jeddah, which was comparatively cheaper than air freight substantially, said a leading fruit exporter Shamim Ahmed on Saturday.
He said that most of the Sindhri variety of mango was shipped to Dubai and Jeddah through reefer containers, which had the advantage of providing longer shelf life.
He said the export through reefer containers made the small and medium exporters out of business as huge investment was required to ship fruits through reefer containers.
Earlier, a fruit shipment to the Middle East cost Rs 200,000 whereas the cost of a shipment in a reefer container is about one million rupees.
Shamim Ahmed lauded the performance of the staff of the Collectorate of Customs (Export) on all export stations, including Karachi Port, Port Qasim and Air Freight Unit.
There had been absolutely no problem for the exporters and the staff responded promptly to help the exporters in smooth flow of consignments, he observed.
