This is in reference the news appearing about Major Aziz Bhatti Park, Gulshan-e- Iqbal, Karachi, with reference of Liaquat Ali, District officer, Park, CDGK.
We, the residents of the nearby area appreciate the renovation of the park but at the same time, are very much concerned about the news that the contract to renovate the park is awarded to a private company for investment on BOT (Build, Operate and Transfer) Basis.
The private company will invest in the project, then operate it by getting their investment back with profit and ultimately transfer the project to the authority free of charges.
We have also come to know that this contract is awarded to a leading amusement company, who already has an amusement park, located just behind Aziz Bhatti park and this company is extending their park into Aziz Bhatti Park and will be entitled to use 38 acres of Aziz Bhatti Park's Amenity land for their commercial and profit-taking purpose.
Most importantly, in its plans for renovation, the private company plans to include new amusement facilities like water games and a boat ride for its own profitable gains and this type of activities are considered to be commercial activities and they will be on an amenity park.
It should be noted that the Aziz Bhatti Park is solely an amenity plot, and by law, cannot be used for such commercial purposes.
The responsibility of maintaining a local park lies with the administration of the concern area and should not be handed over to the private sector who has their own profit making aims in mind.
The proper authority is kindly requested to look into the above matter and reconsider their decision in the best interest of the people residing in Gulshan-e- Iqbal.
The park is located in a residential area and has been frequented by the local populace for the past many decades.
This plot was allocated in the 1960's specifically for the enjoyment of the public of Karachi city. Allowing the private party to take control of the area may result in restricted entry into the park, depriving local residents of their right to freely access recreation areas.
Looking forward to a clear decision by the concerned authority thorough the paper and electronic media
