The Aurat Foundation has demanded of the government to extend the local government (LG) system to the Federally-Administered Areas (Fata) by holding elections on the adult franchise basis with proper representation for the tribal women.
In a press release, issued here on Monday, the foundation said that it was a matter of concern that instead of going for the democratic process of holding elections, the government had opted for revival of the agency councils.
"This cannot be a substitute to the popular electoral exercise", it said, saying the tribesmen, civil society and almost all the main political parties were opposed to the revival of the agency councils, which would have nominated people.
The foundation said it was regrettable that the tribal women had been kept out of the proposed agency councils. "Different social groups like lawyers, journalists, religious scholars and retired government officials, except for women will have seats on the-nominated agency councils.
"It is a grave injustice to the tribal women, who are already facing discrimination as compared to their counterparts in other parts of the country," the press release added.
