The National Assembly Standing Committee on Local Government and Rural Development took serious note of delay in execution and implementation of development schemes proposed by the parliamentarians.
The meeting decided to hold district-wise consultative meetings of parliamentarians, local government representatives and executive departments to streamline the implementation of development schemes.
Maulana Hamid-ul-Haq Haqqani chaired the meeting of the committee held at parliament House here on Thursday.
The meeting welcomed the induction of Muhammad Ajmal Khan into the cabinet as federal minister for Local Government and Rural Development.
The meeting observed that the major cause of substandard quality of work was commissions and kickbacks in the process of awarding contracts.
The committee sought clarifications from Public Works Department (PWD) that how can a contractor perform quality and timely work when he has to pay 25-35 percent of the actual amount as commission.
Members of the committee agreed on the suggestion that in order to ensure quality of work and timely completion, rates for contractors should be rationalised.
The committee asked Director General PWD to conduct a thorough probe into alleged irregularities unearthed in development schemes of parliamentarians.
The DG PWD has also been directed to submit the report of the inquiry within one month.
