Belgium's diamond industry exported a record $4.01 billion in cut diamonds in the first six months of the year, up 16.4 percent in terms of value from the same period last year, the industry body said on Friday.
"The strong rise in exports of cut diamonds points to a healthy increase both in consumer demand for cut diamonds as well as the capacity of the Antwerp market to live up to that demand," the Diamond High Council said in a statement.
Exports to the United States, the biggest market, rose 6.3 percent to $1.34 billion, accounting for about a third of the total.
In terms of volume, exports actually dropped by 1.2 percent to 5.09 million carats.
