PML (N) chairman Muhammad Zafarul Haq has demanded setting up of an independent tribunal for fixing responsibility of Kargil operation which, he said, "badly damaged Pakistan's image" internally as well as globally.
Addressing a press conference at the PML(N) camp office here on Saturday he said that the probe would "sort out the real causes of the Kargil episode so that person found guilty must be punished."
He said it is clearly indicated that prime minister, Nawaz Sharif, was not informed about the military operation. He quoted former US president Bill Clinton's remarks in his book 'My Life' which gives the clue that the misadventure of Kargil was without the permission of Nawaz Sharif which consequently led to the military intervention in an elected democratic government.
Zafar said that after the Lahore declaration, the Kashmir issue was about to be solved and Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee had admitted that Kashmir was a flash point, but due to the military intervention the matter receded into abeyance.
Regretting the construction of iron fence on the line of control (LOC), he said it could happen only because of weak and hollow policies of the government , and added that this was totally against the UN resolution.
About Pakistan's image, he said that the recent statement of US deputy secretary indicated that Pakistan was considered an infiltrator of terrorists, despite being the front line ally of war against terrorism.
