Four Iraqi veterinarians were killed and three wounded when a roadside bomb exploded in the path of their bus on Tuesday, while a senior official in southern Iraq became the latest high-profile murder.
Adding to the death count, a policeman was gunned down near the restive city of Ramadi, west of Baghdad, as rebels continue a seemingly organised campaign to try to unseat the interim government.
The minibus, carrying nine veterinary surgeons, hit the bomb in Ghalabia, 80 kilometres (50 miles) west of Baghdad, said Ali Ibrahim, head of the nearby Al-Khalis hospital.
Three of the vets died on the spot and another en route to a hospital in Baquba, Ibrahim said, adding that two others were in a serious condition and a fourth was only slightly hurt.
US MARINE KILLED: A US marine was killed in action on Tuesday in Anbar province west of Baghdad, the US military said.
The death brings to at least 659 the number of US troops killed in action in Iraq since the invasion in March last year to oust Saddam Hussein.
