The Central Board of Revenue (CBR) has agreed to release shipping bills of the leather garments exporters after an undertaking by Pakistan Leather Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (Plgmea) that there will be no variation in weight mentioned in the shipping bill and in actual weight of the consignment.
The issue was resolved at a meeting held here between CBR Chairman Abdullah Yousuf and Plgmea Chairman Fawad Ijaz Khan.
The former was informed that the Plgmea members were facing problem in getting duty drawback, as their shipping bills were detained by the Customs due to difference in weight.
On assurance from the Plgmea that there would be no variation in weight in shipping bills filed after March 20, the CBR chief directed the Collector of Exports to release the detained shipping bills.
Fawad informed the CBR chief that 16.38 percent excise duty was imposed on the imported chemicals in the 2002-03 budget, adding that there was no mechanism for that duty refund to the exporters.
Abdullah directed Sales Tax Collector Khwaja Tanveer to look into the matter and allow refund on the excise duty to the exporters.
About five-percent duty on import of Shearing leather, the CBR chief advised the Plgmea to refer to the case to the budget anomalies committee, which would be resolved at that forum.
He assured the Plgmea Chairman that the issue of restriction on the export of leather garments with fur trimming would be resolved in the new trade policy.
Meanwhile, the Plgmea members were asked to contact Additional Collector of Exports Wasif Ali Memon to get their shipments cleared.
