Federal Finance Minister and Prime Minister-designate Shaukat Aziz has said Thar is very backward and poverty-hit area despite the fact that it is included among 10 big coal reserves of the world.
Addressing a public gathering here on Sunday, Shaukat Aziz claimed that economic revolution would commence after completion of coal power plant in Thar.
He said: "The present government is taking all-out steps for development of Thar and work is under way on poverty alleviation projects, provision of employment by creating opportunities of jobs and better utilisation of coal.
Shaukat Aziz, who is contesting by-election from NA-229 Thar, has told the public gathering that after the election process was over, work on Thar master plan would be started. He claimed that people of Sindh would get rid of their poverty and hunger soon.
He pledged to visit Thar regularly with interval of three months and know grievances of the people.
Sindh Chief Minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim, while addressing the gathering, said that the provincial government would not compromise on Sindh's interests and added that importance of the water accord of 1991 has been accepted and it would be implemented in its true sense.
He alleged that the past governments sold the water share of Sindh by signing the water accord of 1994. He said the discovery of coal and water reserves in a huge quantity would help development and prosperity of Thar.
"There is no concept of minority or majority in Thar and all the communities living here are brothers," he said and appealed to masses to vote for Shaukat Aziz.
Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed, Ahmed Ali Durrani, Muhammad Ali, District Nazim Arbab Ataullah, former MNA Arbab Amir Hussain, Tehsil Nazim Mithi Faqir Sher Muhammad, Aleem Adil Shaikh also spoke on the occasion.
On the occasion, Bheel, Meghwar and Memon communities of the area announced to join the unified Muslim League.
District Naib Nazim Alluhrayo Mallah presented Shaukat Aziz with traditional gift of a silver sword.
