Expressing anguish over long imprisonment of Asif Ali Zardari, Opposition leader in National Assembly Maulana Fazl ur Rahman has termed it against human rights and democratic values.
In a press statement issued here on Monday, Maulana Fazl ur Rahman said Asif Ali Zardari is behind the bars for the last eight years who was arrested after dissolution of Benazir Bhutto government in 1996.
He said that four successive governments had failed to provide justice to Asif Ali Zardari, adding his imprisonment the longest in the history and if he had been inducted in all the trials he faced he would have completed his jail terms by now. But using delaying tactics in dispensing justice is not only human rights violation but also poses a question for judiciary.
The opposition leader said that Zardari has so far faced a number of trials and presently 9 cases against him are in the court. He said that cases against him should be decided immediately as his punishment cannot be justified with his alleged crimes. He said that it is need of the hour that torture of political leaders should be stop with immediately as the politics of revenge has caused irretrievable loss to democracy, which suffered the whole nation.
Maulana Fazl ur Rahman said that bar on freedom of expression and political victimisation is not only cancerous for democracy but also against human rights. This attitude is also tarnishing image of Pakistan in the comity of nations.
