The government has devised a new agriculture strategy focussing emphasis on sustainable food security increasing productivity commercial agriculture, imports substitution income diversification and export orientation.
According to official sources, the strategy is directed that the natural resources base as land and water were conserved and the situations of short water supply or drought were mitigated.
Attempt is being made to arrange adulteration free availability of farm inputs and steps have been taken to reduce cost of farm inputs.
In procurement of agricultural commodities, the role of private sector is being emphasised leading to public-private sector partnership.
The institutional services as agricultural research and extension are geared to raise productivity and profitability of the farmers and address issues faced by the farming community at field level.
The services in agricultural marketing are being renovated and it is planned to establish new markets in areas where marketing structure is weak.
Efforts are also being made to remove market imperfections and provide an enabling environment for farmers to market their produce at reasonable price.
Strategy envisages special focus on establishing a network of quality testing laboratories in public sector for grains, livestock diseases and products, fertiliser and agro-chemicals residue testing and strengthening of plant and animal quarantine services.
