A division bench of Sindh High Court (SHC) comprising Justice Muhammad Mujeebullah Siddiqui and Justice Muhammad Afzal Soomro on Tuesday set aside the conviction of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM)'s activist in newspaper office blast case. Muhammad Uzair Qureshi was sentenced to life imprisonment by Special Judge of Suppression of Terrorist Activities (STA) court Karachi East on January 8, 2004.
He was prosecuted on charge of conspiring in making bomb blast at office of Nawa-e-Waqt on November 11, 2000 in Soldier Bazar area Karachi in which six person were injured while alleged suicide woman bomber Mst. Parveen was killed.
Prosecution alleged that accused along with other MQM's activists Kazim Raza, Ansar Ahmed, Javed Ahmed, Sardar Ahmed, Javed Turk, Mujeeb Abbas and woman suicide bomber conspired to attack on office of newspaper as it was publishing news against their party.
Arguing on behalf of appellant, Azizullah Sheikh advocate submitted that his client was falsely implicated in the case. He contended that in fact appellant was arrested on January 21, 2001 and his arrest was shown in the case on March 3, 2001 by police.
He further submitted that complaint regarding his illegal arrest was sent to Governor House and Chief Justice of SHC and also produced documentary evidence in this regard.
Assistant Advocate General Habib Ahmed supported the trial court order.
The court after hearing arguments of both side counsels, for the reason to be recorded later on, set a side the trial court order and order to release the appellant forthwith if not involved in other cases.
