London white sugar futures settled mostly higher on Tuesday on trade and speculator buying in low turnover, traders said. Front month October finished unchanged at $248.0 a tonne in volume of just 586 lots, having moved between $249.5 and $247.2. December ended up $0.9 at $252.0 in turnover of 496 lots.
"Trade and speculators are buying in light volumes. The stronger dollar could encourage Brazilian producer selling," one trader said.
Sterling fell against the dollar on Tuesday after stronger than expected US consumer confidence data triggered a broad-based rally in the greenback.
Traders said a sustained break of October futures above $248.0 would bring resistance of $251.0 into view.
Traders ignored a three-day truckers' strike in Brazil, which began on Monday.
Transport sector officials in Brazil said the strike called by a union representing a third of autonomous truck drivers failed on Monday to have much of an impact on shipments in its first day.
