World Bank has highly commended the Chief Minister's Education Sector Reforms Programme and termed it a revolutionary step towards enhancement of literacy rate in the province.
Tahseen Sayed Member of the World Bank Mission in Pakistan stated this during a meeting with Punjab Education Minister Mian Imran Masood here on Friday.
Tahseen said that Punjab Education Sector Reforms Programme was a comprehensive development plan in this sector, which would prove to be a result-oriented scheme introduced in the best interest of the children relating to less privileged groups.
She expressed satisfaction over the performance of the government in social sector, especially in the field of education. She observed that the programme implementation was very much on track and the Government of Punjab has taken necessary steps to maintain programme momentum.
She further stated that the reform programme was being monitored effectively and funds provided by the Bank have been utilised for the welfare of poor strata of the society in a transparent manner.
The members of the Mission were pleased to note that proper implementation of the programme has resulted in increasing the enrolment in schools of the province.
In addition to that school councils were functional in many districts and could be financed to undertake the functions that have been notified for the school councils.
According to her, a girl's stipend programme targeting all girls enrolled in Classes 6-8 in government schools in 15 low literacy districts was launched, and two quarterly instalments of stipends to over 150,000 eligible girl students were provided in these districts.
She assured that Bank would increase its financial co-operation to expand the radius of reforms particularly in the education sector.
Expressing his views, the minister said that promotion of education was the top priority of the government and it has formulated a historical education policy having objectives like improvement in academic environment, support to public private partnership and removing regional and gender disparities.
Under this policy a total number of 37674 missing facilities have been identified from the district profile throughout the Punjab for which 14608 schemes costing Rs 5 billion have been prepared under Chief Minister's Education Sector Reform Programme.
He said that the government has established well-organised institution, "Punjab Monitoring and Implementation Unit". It has developed excellent monitoring system programme and for the first time education data was being effectively and analytically used for policy decision planning and monitoring purposes, he added.
