State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Governor Dr Ishrat Husain on Sunday called upon the students to focus on quality education and its application in the practical life.
Speaking as chief guest at the commencement of the 10th academic session, "re-orientation ceremony" of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology (Szabist) here, he said the role of quality education in the economic development can not be overlooked.
Dr Ishrat Husain said political intervention, chit system (illegal recommendations from people of political influence) in the public sector has ruined the national institutions and the quality of education.
However, the SBP governor said, he had successfully eliminated this menace from the SBP system by introducing merit and strictly adhering to it while making recruitment.
He said the students should work hard to the extent that the employer should come to them instead of them running from pillar to post to get any job. Dr Ishrat referred to hiring of all batches of Institute of Business Administration (IBA) due to higher standard and excellent performance of the students.
He also pointed out that SBP administered an entrance test to 90 girls for only 30 vacancies, but their performance was so impressive that all of them were inducted into the Bank by creating additional seats.
Talking about the forthcoming challenges of globalisation, Dr Ishrat Husain said only those nations with quality education would economically survive. He said knowledge and intelligence coupled with discipline were the basic factors for acquiring good job in any sector.
He also pointed out the need to set up reputable educational institutions to produce quality minds. It would also help enhance our economic system, he added.
Dr Ishrat paid tributes to Szabist for providing quality education to the youth and suggested to focus on case studies so that local cases would be referred during training and teaching, which would be easier to understand and facilitate application of its results in different situations in practical life.
Earlier, Project Director Szabist Dr Javed Leghari briefed the SBP governor about the Institute.
