Paknet, an Internet Service Provider (ISP), is all set to launch Digital Subscribes Line (DSL) service in 15 different cities in next couple of months.
The announcement was made by Paknet Chief Executive Mueen Sadiq Malik while addressing a press conference here at a local hotel on Thursday.
DSL Internet service is over 27 times faster than a standard 56kbps modem.
He said that the Paknet is currently servicing 250,000 customers in nearly 1800 cities/towns, and expects to grab more in coming months.
Mueen Sadiq said that three cities of Islamabad, Lahore and Gujranwala have already been commissioned in the first phase and are ready for DSL service while Karachi will be commissioned soon within a next few days.
DSL service will soon be started in 11 other cities of the country in next two months, he said. These cities are Gujrat, Faisalabad, Peshawar, Sialkot, Multan, Quetta, Sahiwal, Sargodha, Sukkur, Bahawalpur and Hyderabad.
With this new technology, Sadiq said, users can access Internet over their existing phone lines with speed starting from 64kbps and going up to a 1.5mbps (over 27 times faster than a standard 56kbps modem).
While at the same time, users will be able to make a voice call from the same phone line.
Replying to a query, the Paknet chief executive said that the service can be used to deliver bandwidth intensive applications like streaming audio/video, online games, application programs, telephone calling, video conferencing and other high bandwidth services.
He assured that the Paknet's DSL service would be the cheapest service in the country. To another question, Sadiq said that the Paknet's DSL service would have no disconnection problems.
