Progress of the proposed 'freight village' at Wazir Mansion was reviewed at the site by Chairman Railways Asif Hayat Malik during a visit on Thursday.
The railways is developing its own freight container terminal as Freight Village at Wazir Mansion Railway Station to provide a boost to freight container traffic by rail and help reduce congestion at the Karachi Port.
The Chairman Railways, who was accompanied by Divisional Superintendent Railways Karachi Junaid Qureshi, reviewed the progress of the proposed plan and had a detailed briefing from the divisional superintendent.
He was informed that the railways would involve the private sector for investment in this project, which would cost an estimated Rs 23 million.
Later, the railways chief had a meeting with KPT chairman and discussed railway-related matters.
He also inspected the facilities at Karachi International Container Terminal and Pakistan International Container Terminal at the port and was briefed about the working of these two terminals.
Containers from these terminals are already being despatched for upcountry destinations by railway.
Asif Hayat held out an assurance that the Railways will provide all possible facilities for early clearance of container traffic from their sites.
In the evening, the chairman Railways along with the divisional superintendent called on Sindh Governor Dr Ishrat-ul-Ibad Khan at the Governor House and discussed matters of common interests, including the revitalisation of Karachi Circular Railway.
The governor assured the railway chief that the provincial government would extend all possible assistance in the removal of encroachments from the periphery of the Circular Railway.
Talking to APP, Divisional Superintendent Junaid Qureshi said that while reviewing the working of this railway division, the chairman expressed his satisfaction and directed that further steps should be taken to increase the existing freight traffic and further improve the facilities for passengers.
He directed the officials that all ongoing development projects be completed within the stipulated period.
The railway chief left here on Friday morning for Islamabad after a three-day stay in the provincial capital.
